The following information was recorded in the town’s newspaper of 27 January 1917
Lieutenant (temporary Captain) Mackenzie, whom we intimated a few weeks ago was awarded the Military Medal, was a Grangehill, Beith, this week on a visit to his relations there. His brother, Lieutenant George Mackenzie, was also on a visit.
Sergeant William Oliphant, RSF, son of Mrs Oliphant, West Kilbride, and grandson of Andrew Brodie, currier, Beith, was killed on active service on 9th January, 1917.
Fresh from the trenches in France, Corporal Jack Muir, Beith, was home on leave this week and is looking fit and well.
Private Fulton Gibson, A & SH, son of Mr John Gibson, slater, Mitchell Street, Beith, is on leave this week from the front. This is Private Gibson’s second leave from the fighting arena, he having been out close upon two years without having received scarcely a scratch.
Sergeant J S Millar, RSF, was home on leave this week before leaving with a draft for France.
Among soldiers on leave this week are Gunner Andrew Moffat, RFA, Kings Road; Private John Gibson, RSF, Eglinton Street; Private James Lamb, Mitchell Street; and Sapper John Snodgrass, RE.
Wonder was expressed long ago why German prisoners of war were not employed here as from the first in enemy countries, and it is not surprise now that the government have seen the error of their predecessors’ ways and are to compel the prisoners to work on the land.
A Grand Concert will be held in the Kerse Mission Hall on Friday evening, 9th February. Chair to be taken at 7.30 pm. Come and spend an enjoyable evening and assist a good cause. Collection in aid of Cross funds.

A skating holiday was granted the pupils at Spiers School and schools under the Board on Wednesday. The day was a very fine one and many enjoyed the outing on a fine sheet of ice at Castlesemple Loch.
