When lacing your '74 Commando front wheel, the offset distance between the brake rotor mounting surface and the CENTERLINE of the rim should be 1 13/16" (that's one and thirteen sixteenths). The drum rear wheel should have the rim centred. If you need more advice, call Buchanan's 818-280-4003.

49.2 Stainless Rims.

I came in Monday, after a week away, and found 500 messages in my inbox, virtually all from Brit Iron. Anyhow I'm slowly working through them and would like to add to the debate on Stainless rims.

I recall reading a report from the Devon Rim Company about their Stainless rims. The article gave details of their manufacturing techniques, they buy in coils of wm1/2/3 profile, cut them to the correct length for whatever size wheel, then weld, dimple and pierce the spoke holes. It all looked thoroughly professional.

Anyhow, the interesting bit was the tests they performed on the rims. They found under test that after about 20k miles that the spoke holes started to fracture, as at least one other poster has already observed. They cured this by using washers under each nipple, against the rim. They then performed another road test, and found no problems up to 100k miles.

I've noticed that their rims are about 120 quid each, as against other suppliers where they go for about 80 quid. This seems to indicate other producers making the rims out of less superior material, or could be the same rim with the Devon wheel Co defending their reputation.

Anyhow, I'm looking to replace a rusty front Commando rim with stainless in the near future, I'd like to go with the Devon Rim and washers, which are supplied as an extra. I'll try and get an answer on the difference in weight first though.
