46.1 Indexing Sparkplugs.

We might keep in mind as we discuss "how tight the sparking plug" the trick of indexing the plug. You mark the direction of the opening of the electrode on the body of the plug with MajikMarker. Then, as you tighten the plug, you aim your mark at the intake valve. Theoretically, this trick results in quicker propagation of the flame front.

Does it work? "Circle Track" magazine did a test a few years ago and found a 3 hp (if memory serves me well) improvement on a dyno-tested Sprint Car engine, simply from indexing the plugs.

And remember...you have to use a NEW plug gasket each time you reinstall a plug, in order to accomplish this "indexing" feat. It's the crushing of the gasket that allows you to aim the plug as you tighten, without overtightening.
