Mission Statement

The Barbican Theatre, Plymouth, places education and the development of creative skills at the heart of its mission. Its formal mission statement is as follows:

To offer as many people as possible, but especially the young, access to, participation in, and enjoyment of, high-quality artistic activity without prejudice. This is practised in the belief that such involvement cultivates, inspires and enthuses individuals and communities to explore and express ideas and needs, voice opinions, celebrate together and agitate to provoke social and cultural change.

The Barbican Theatre's current operation is:

The production of new, issue-based theatre for outreach and small-scale touring.

The operation of the Barbican Theatre as a venue promoting national and regional small scale touring theatre and dance. The company emphasis is on new and experimental work which would not otherwise be available to audiences in Plymouth and the region.

An extensive open-access arts education programme including youth theatre, contemporary dance, new writing, singing, circus, trapeze and integrated work with special needs.

Arts-in-community projects working at grassroots with traditionally marginalised groups.

The building is also home to Attic Dance, the only professional dance company based in The South West region.

It is widely recognised that the uniqueness of the theatre's work lies in the relationship between its professional small-scale touring and Theatre-in-Education product, its Arts Education programme and its promotion of local, regional and national theatre and dance performance. These activities catalyse a set of creative relationships, which continually feed from each other, challenging the form, content, appropriateness and relevance of the creative work.
