Girardinichthys ireneae.
Family :- Goodeidae Jordan 1923

Range:- While originally this species was thought to exist in many parts of the states of Michoacán & Guanajuato. In recent years it has only been seen in the immediate area of Lake Zacapu and a few ponds on the North side of Zacapu.
Dorsal Ray Count :- 31 - 38
This is a very territorial and reclusive species that more readily comes out at night to feed. Although I have managed to pursued some of mine to feed by day when I added a few of the Lake Zacapu Zoogoneticus to their tank. For the most part though you will need live food to keep this species in good health even though some tank bred species at the Lab have been seen to pick at flake food. If you are luck enough to get fry from this species, they would normally be found at the surface where they will spend there time as fry until they start to mature and seek a refuge on the bottom where you should always have a lot of cover for them in the form of pots, rocks, plastic tubes, and or dense plants .
Below left,
Is the "La Angostura" swimming pool entrance to Lake Zacapu where in Feb 2000 we found mainly Skiffia SP, cf. lermae plus a few Allotoca sp, some Zoogoneticus and Xenotoca variata.
Right Above,
Here we have the other side of the lake where on the same day we found the a reasonable number of Girardinichthys ireneae,( Formally known as, Hubbsina turneri) plus a few of the others found on the opposite side of the lake plus Carp & Goodea Atripinnis.
