DGLZ Convention 2002
Dear Member,
Come join me and take a pictorial trip to Munich to visit the DGLZ Livebearer show. Well we started off with a shock when we learnt on arrival at the airport that we had booked a flight to Frankfurt Hahn not Frankfurt Main Airport. As Hahn was 125 klm from Frankfurt

Now the idea was that my friend Manfred Meyer would pick me up from outside the main entrance to the Railway Station and take me to his home to talk over old times
|
and collect some fish. Then travel together to Munich the next morning. So on arrival at Frankfurt I asked a Taxi driver, which was the main entrance to the station then just sat down on the steps to wait for him. Well when an hour had elapsed I began to think that it was about time to try to call him on his mobile. Now hears the joke! he had also been waiting over an hour for me at the other entrance to the station and when we each checked out any other entrances we must have both done so at the same time both going by different routs and so missing each other. And as the Taxi driver had misled me as to which was the main entrance I naturally returned to where I had been. Eventually that evening he took me to a guest house he had booked and paid for me, in the village where he lives, as he lives in a flat which is part of his fathers house. The following day we set of for our 5 hour drive to Munich where we arrived around midday.

Finally arriving at the Hotel Zur Post for the show. Now all the setting up etc is all done by Friday night as they have there own elaborate staging and tanks. All supplied with it's own air supply and plants so this had to be done before Friday as it takes a while to sort out. Also a lot of the fish will start arriving by Post and Train before the show. The remainder being brought on Friday evening when all the judging will take place. .Normally there will be around 250 tanks of fish.

Then on Saturday the whole thing really gets going the public are admitted and the lectures start, and some of the lectures would already have taken place on Saturday

However by the time that the "Members Fish Auction" took place at 2-0pm the hall had filled up again. However the number of members attending seemed to be well down this year. I would think that some of this may well have been due to the fact that
Munich is well to the South of Germany and many members would not travel that far. this has from time to time been the case but once these member get used to the new cheap air-flights within the country I would think that this would improve.
(NOTE do not forget that petrol in Europe is 4 times the price of what it is in the USA).The Auction was followed by a number of committee meetings one of the best attended being the one I had called for the "Fish Ark", this was when I gave them a report bringing the project up to date for everyone and telling all of my intention to formulate a committee to assist in the running of the project. Once this was all done everyone went back to there rooms to get ready for the evening function and prize giving

Sunday morning is usually when members make there last minute swoops, but also many of the fish that where sent to the Show are to be auctioned if the owners wish, and surprisingly many do. However by this time I had more than enough fish and as Manfred wanted to make an early start we left to return to Frankfurt and then returned home late Sunday night.
