The Church of St. Edmund, Allenton and Shelton Lock

The Church of St. Edmund was built in the late 1930's. The foundation stone was laid on 18th March 1939 by Bishop Rawlinson and the building work was completed for the Consecration which took place on 9th December 1939. The builders were Harlow, Stone and Storer to the architect Mr G.M. Eaton of Derby. The parish of Allenton and Shelton Lock was formed in 1928 in which year the parish registers commence and an ex army wooden hut was purchased for use as the place of worship. Prior to 1928 the Anglican community had worshiped either in the Allenton Schoolroom or at Boulton St. Mary's. Source = Early Allenton and its Environs by Audrey D.
