Bauhahn Geneology Page

When I was growing up, it appeared that our immediate family and maiden aunt were the only Bauhahns in the whole world. We had a geneological tree which traced our lineage back to Nienburg in Germany...but it seemed as if all the branches had been lopped off! Then, thanks to the Internet, I found many families in Germany with the same last name (and thereby they discovered each other). Subsequently it turned out that other relatives in the U.S.A. had changed the spelling of their family name from Bauhahn to Bauhan. In December 2001 a number of geneologic links have been established in Germany with individuals with the surname of Bauhan (see BauhahnMercenaries.html).

During 11-12 August 2001 we had a lovely family reunion in Nienburg (Weser) to the west of Hannover in Germany with about 30 attending.

The earliest relation of whom we were aware was Wilhelm Bauhahn who passed away in Nienburg 3 January 1796. This has now been pushed back to 1687 in Laudenbach.

Several pages of letters written in Old German in the 1800s have been scanned and are being transcribed first in current German and then translated into English by Juergen Bauhahn. The index page for these is available at: German Letters.

Recently some U.S. Census figures from 1880-1820 have also become available with interesting information. The index page for these documents is: Census Index.

If you know of other Bauhahns (or more details about those here listed), please do pass that information on to us at email address: bauhahnm@clara.net

Another branch of the family in Germerode has been revealed due to the finding of Hessian mercenaries brought to the U.S.A. Read some of the interesting details in BauhahnMercenaries.html.
