I have been hooked on the sport of Speedway a few times in my life. I first saw the sport as a kid at my home town of Barrow-in-Furness when the Barrow Bombers raced at Holker Street. This was the period 1972-74 before I even started school. Sadly circumstances were that the sport could not be sustained in the town. Racing also took place in 1977,78,81,84 and 85. I have built a fairly basic website about Speedway in Barrow. Click here to access it. The years inbetween meant I did not get to see any Speedway but from 1985 onwards I had started working so I could afford to travel to other tracks.

After Speedway finally ceased in Barrow I travelled regulary to other tracks, the nearest were Belle Vue and Bradford. I also managed to see meetings at the Scottish tracks and Sheffield. Between 1986 and 1990 I tried to see a meeting every 3 weeks or so but this was not always possible due to cost and weather. Both Bradford and Belle Vue were 200 mile round trips from my home. My interest started to wane in 1991 partly due to all the travelling I was doing to support Barrow AFC. Between 1991 and 1999 I saw only 2 meetings and totally lost touch. After finishing my stint as a mature student at University I got a job in Surrey and looked up my nearest track; Reading Speedway. It only took a few meetings before I was hooked again. After seeing 2 meetings in 8 years I saw 24 meetings in 4 and a half months ! I'm not sure if I brought the Racers bad luck though. In my first visit to Smallmead Dave Mullet had his awful accident which was the start of a terrible run for the Racers which resulted in the 1999 Premier League wooden spoon. I think I saw Reading win 1 league match that year..... Since June 1999 I have been to many Southern tracks for the first time. Reading (of course), Oxford, Arena Essex, Poole, Exeter, Eastbourne, Swindon, Newport and Peterborough. |
