1972 Wally Mawdsley, Peter Oakes and Ivan Mauger

Ivan Mauger The consortium of Mawdsley, Oakes and Mauger introduced Speedway to Barrow in 1972 at the Holker Street home of the towns struggling division 4 (then) soccer club. According to the programmes Mawdsley was the promoter, Oakes took care of administration whilst Mauger had the title of Racing Controller. Mawdsley and Oakes were old hands in Speedway promotion whilst Mauger was at the time at the peak of his career. In fact that year he won the World Championship.

1973-74 George Graham

Picture of George Graham George Graham took over from the previous promotion for the 1973 season. Mr Graham was a businesman from Workington who had previous involvment with the Workington Town rugby league club. He ran the club for two seasons until disputes with the landlord soccer club led to Speedway being stopped in Barrow.

1977-78 Cliff Hindle

I don't know much about Cliff Hindle. He dabbled in Speedway in the early '60's I believe, I think at Belle Vue. Cliff was invloved in Speedway in the early seventies as his son, Ian Hindle, was taking up the sport. Ian rode for Barrow, Scunthorpe and Workington. Mr Hindle even built his son his own practice track in the area. Cliff was, and still might be, a plant hire businessman in the Furness area giving him access to usefull equipment. After Speedway finished at Holker Street he sought out the Park Road site and built the humble stadium from scratch. Sadly crowds were never as big as for Holker Street and he pulled the plug at the end of the Furness Flyers only league season.

Surprisingly Cliff Hindle was never showed any apparent interest when Chris Roynon made another attempt at running the sport in Barrow. Mr Hindles large dumper trucks have been prominent on local roads for years leading me to think that he is still in the area. if you know any more please email me.

1984-85 Chris Roynon

Picture of Chris Roynon
Chris Roynon had settled in the area after riding for Barrow in the 70's. It was reported that Mr Roynon was taking Autogiro lessons and happened to fly over the derelict Park Road track. Chris decided to make an attempt to run Speedway there. He called himself a 'one man band' referring to him the lack of support from local businesses. He ran stock cars then greyhounds at the track for a few years before Park road became unused again. I believe he still lives in the Furness area and his son, Adam Roynon, is currently learning the ropes of becoming a Speedway rider. Let's hope he makes it to maintain a connection between Speedway and Barrow.
