A league Speedway team operated in Barrow during the years 1972-74 and 1978. Open meetings were held in 1977,84 and 1985. In addition the Berwick Bandits raced 5 meetings in Barrow, in 1981,in an abortive attempt to keep themselves running after losing their track. This site is part of a long term project of mine to research Speedway in my hometown.

There are some pictures of the old Park Road track on the Speedwayplus website. Click on the venues link and select Barrow. The pictures were taken in 1994 before a factory was built on the site.

The long awaited book 'Speedway in the North-West' was published in the Spring of 2004. There are two chapters about Speedway in Barrow. They deal with Speedway before and after the war respectively. The author has done a lot of research for this book and has spoken to former promoters and riders. What they had to say makes very interesting reading. In addition there is a chapter on the famous Barrovian rider of the pre-war era Frank Charles.  For anyone interested in Speedway in Barrow this book is essential reading. Other tracks covered include: Workington, Blackpool, Preston and Fleetwood. The book can be obtained for about £15 at many tracks or cheaper from online bookshops like Amazon.
