Ormskirk library has copies of the Ormskirk Advertiser on microfilm from the late 1840s.
The Leeds and Liverpool Canal passes close to Ormskirk. There is a junction to the Ribble at Burscough Bridge. At Wigan there is a junction to Leigh where it joins the Bridgewater canal. The main route goes through Chorley, to Blackburn, Burnley, Barnoldswick, Skipton and Leeds.
