Shirt Making Guide.
Introduction.
This article is adapted from an article in Adventurer #30 By Sarah Thursfield.
The basic undergarment for men and women has changed very little from early Anglo-Saxon times until the early nineteenth century.
Measurements.
The following designs don't really need a pattern as the size of the pieces depends on your measurements. The following shows the measurements that will be needed.
- Shoulder to hem: Mid thigh length (Men) or about knee length (Women).
- Chest/Bust.
- Arm length, shoulder bone to wrist with arm bent.
- Shoulder length, base of neck to shoulder bone.
- Neck Size (collar size).
- Top arm girth.
- Hand size, the smallest loop through which the hand will pass freely.
- Waist to hem, women only, strictly approximate for cutting gores.
