Shirt Making Guide.

Introduction.

This article is adapted from an article in Adventurer #30 By Sarah Thursfield.

The basic undergarment for men and women has changed very little from early Anglo-Saxon times until the early nineteenth century.

Measurements.

The following designs don't really need a pattern as the size of the pieces depends on your measurements. The following shows the measurements that will be needed.

Shirt 01

  1. Shoulder to hem: Mid thigh length (Men) or about knee length (Women).
  2. Chest/Bust.
  3. Arm length, shoulder bone to wrist with arm bent.
  4. Shoulder length, base of neck to shoulder bone.
  5. Neck Size (collar size).
  6. Top arm girth.
  7. Hand size, the smallest loop through which the hand will pass freely.
  8. Waist to hem, women only, strictly approximate for cutting gores.
