Hat Making Guide.

The Floppy Beret.

  1. Cut 2 circles of material. You can use the same material but the cap looks nicer if you use 2 contrasting colours or different materials. Use a length of string and a pin to mark out the circle (or use a a dustbin lid and cut a circle 5 cm larger than the lid).

  2. Place the circle right side together and sew them together about a half centimetre from the edge all the way round except for a gap of about 10 cm.

  3. Now turn the hat the right way out and sew 2 cm from the edge all the way round.
  4. Thread a piece of 1 cm wide elastic through the gap. Do this by fastening a safety pin to the end of the elastic and slowly feeding it through. This job takes a while and can be a real pig at times so be patient.
  5. Adjust the length of the elastic so that it fits round your head comfortably. Tie the elastic and try the cap on to be sure. Cut of the excess. (I think it is a good idea to put a blob of glue on the knot to make sure it doesn't slip but be careful not to get any glue on the hat.)
  6. Neatly sew up the gap (You will have to do this by hand even if you have used a sewing machine for the rest of it).
