Dyeing Guide.
This article is adapted from an article in Adventurer #31 By Jema Davies.
Dying your own materials isn't difficult. Some people like to dye their own materials for making costume. Dyeing materials is very simple and contrary to popular belief doesn't make a horrendous mess either (provided you are careful).
Basically follow the instructions on the dye.
Method 1 - The Bucket and Stick.
- Get a large pot. NO! A *LARGE* pot!
- Fill pot about two thirds full of water.
- Mix dye and water and add a load of salt (Read instructions on dye for amount).
- Damp the fabric and add it to the pot.
- Heat up and stew for about 20 minutes stirring occasionally.
Method 2 - The Washing Machine.
- Chuck dye (Dylon machine dye), salt and fabric in washing machine.
- Turn on for 20 minutes.
- Remove and dry.
Note that dying in a washing machine does not affect the machine in any way.
Method 3 - The Microwave.
- Put 2 tablespoons of dye in a large bowl.
- Add 2 tablespoons of salt and half a pint of boiling water.
- Mix well.
- Dampen fabric and place in dye.
- Cover and nuke on high power.
Dyeing things is an imprecise art. Basically play around, experiment and have fun.
