Bulan cottage

Le Mont, Bulan

This restored rural cottage sleeps 8. It is simply furnished and set in its own meadows near the hamlet of Bulan in The Baronnies, a beautiful unspoilt area of rolling hills.

The area is a centre for walking, fishing, skiing, climbing, tennis, golf and watersports on nearby lakes and rivers.

The nearest towns of reasonable size are Lannemezan and Bagneres de Bigorre. Bagneres is a spa town with a wonderful new thermal bath open to all – Aquensis is well worth a visit for a special treat.

The nearest shops are five miles away at Capvern, as is the Biarritz-Toulouse motorway. The surrounding countryside is amazingly beautiful, and the local wildlife includes many species not seen, or rare in the UK, for instance, beech martens, griffon vultures and edible dormice.

If you are a keen walker and interested in unusual flora and fauna, this is the place for you.

The Baronnies

The Baronnies are a unique area of rolling hills below the backcloth of the high mountains, an area cut off but yet not far from the local centres of activity.

When in the Baronnies you have the peace and quiet needed to recover from the hectic life around -- truly a naturalist's paradise.

You can sense the rhythm of the seasons in the traditional farming activities of a hospitable local population -- a pleasant change from the mechanised world we live in.

Here you have time to enjoy the fresh air, fishing, walking, swimming, horse riding and, when hungry, the delights of the local restaurants.

Though the Baronnies are remote, it is only 15 minutes' drive to the nearest shops at Capvern, and a bit further to the supermarket between Capvern and Lannemezan. Bagneres de Bigorre, with shops of all types, restaurants, bars and a casino, is 12 miles away, and it's only an hour's drive to the ski slopes at La Mongie, with its 56 miles of pistes.

Le Mont

This is a very quiet setting,
with spectacular southerly views (see below); a wonderful place to relax in peace and birdwatch, barbecue on the terrace, or swim in the river nearby. The cottage is larger than it looks and has heating for the winter as well as a large open fire.

The house is a traditional local shepherd's cottage, set in half an acre paddock with fantastic views of the lush landscape framed by the grand and wild mountains behind.

The garden and paddocks are full of wild flowers; herbs for cooking can be picked just outside the door. The only sounds are the songs of the birds and the ringing of the cow bells. There is a river not far away with a deep pool for swimming (see map, below).
