EUROPEAN STORM-PETREL
Hydrobates pelagicus

Checking Hamilton Dock on the 25th on the off chance that the Grey Phalarope from the previous day may have roosted overnight produced a big surprise in the form of a European Storm-petrel flitting around and bathing there at 6:45am. After a few minutes it became more active, making larger circuits, and when I returned shortly afterwards with another observer it could not be relocated.

PURPLE HERON
Ardea purpurea

As elusive as ever, it was seen near the windpump along the south wall of Breydon Water on the 3rd, but not since.

GLOSSY IBIS Plegadis falcinellus
****
The long staying bird at Breydon remained throughout the whole of September, and seems to have recently adopted the mudflats at Burgh Castle as it's favoured haunt. Though it does still sometimes cross over to the north bank at Berney Marshes.

Having spent most of the day at Burgh Castle on the 4th it, along with everything else present, was flushed by a very low flying microlight aircraft. It then flew to the north shore at Berney, where it was still feeding along the shoreline at 20:10. Seen most days between the 4th and 30th from Burgh Castle / Breydon South Wall.

PINK-FOOTED GOOSE

****
36 arrived in off the sea at Ness Point at 6:30am on the 24th, a further eight flew north past there at 7:00. A flock of about 40 was noted soutbound over Mutford on the 24th, so were probably the 36 seen coming in off the sea at Ness Point earlier.

On the 25th 28 flew north past Kessingland, and were shortly after seen continuing northwards past Ness Point.

This species is not a common sight in Suffolk, and these birds had presumably overshot their intended destination due to the strong north-westerly tailwinds at the time.

OSPREY Pandion haliaetus

At 11:10 on the 4th panic amongst the gulls roosting on the Corton Sewage Works roof heralded the arrival, low from the north-east, of an Osprey. It circled twice over the pond there, apparently inspecting the Goldfish, but then lowered its legs to reveal that it was already carrying a medium sized fish which it then proceeded to snack on in flight. It then drifted leisurely off westwards.

One flew low south-eastwards over Mutford at 9:00 on the 12th.
