RED-THROATED DIVER
Gavia stellata

Lowestoft North Beach
- a winter plumaged bird drifted north on the afternoon of the 11th. It's plumage befitted the weather!!!

Single birds were also seen on the sea off Kessingland on the 15th and 17th; and at Corton on the 21st.

SHEARWATER sp.
Puffinus sp.
A northbound shearwater past Lowestoft North Beach at 17:30 on the 4th was probably a Manx.



MANX SHEARWATER Puffinus puffinus
Three flew north past Corton on the evening of the 6th.
Three flew south together past Kessingland on the afternoon of the 7th.



SOOTY SHEARWATER Puffinus griseus

Two flew north past Kessingland on the afternoon of the 6th. One of these was seen off Ness Point 20 minutes later. A further two passed north on the 7th, one of which was seen past Corton. The second bird was pursued by a pale phase Arctic Skua for some time before the skua eventually gave up the chase.

One adult was along Lake Lothing on the 14th and 20th. A first-winter was seen swimming close inshore off Ness Point on the 30th, presumably the same bird roosted on Leathes Ham that night.

One was circling over Ash Farm, Mutford on the 5th.
One flew north past Kessingland on the 23rd, it was approximately 2.5 kilometres out to sea.



QUAIL
Coturnix coturnix

A juvenile was seen on the ground at Blundeston on the 6th. Two were flushed from a field at Mutford on the 17th, the same field where one was seen a couple of times in the spring. Both were seen again on the 18th when the crop was harvested.

One juvenile was feeding on the roundabout at St. Peters Street/Jubilee Way, Lowestoft on the 19th and 20th. While attempting to take some photographs (see above) the bird got nervous a flew off despite tolerating the constant stream of traffic. It soon returned though and was back again on the 21st. Again present there on the 27th.

15 were present on rocks in Lowestoft Harbour before flying up-river along Lake Lothing on the morning of the 15th.
3 flew south past Kessingland on the 16th, with six north past there on the 20th.
One was along the beach at Corton on the 21st another was heard on the 30th.

ARCTIC SKUA Stercorarius parasiticus
On the 4th at least 6 were lingering off Lowestoft North Beach. These included a group of 4 which spent most of their time together on the sea. Attacks were frequent on passing terns, often two skuas would team up.

Two flew south past Kessingland on the 7th on what proved to be an excellent day for skuas.
One flew north past Ness Point at 16:26 the same day.
Another flew north past Kessingland at 7:38 on the 24th before flying past Corton soon after.



MEDITERRANEAN GULL
Larus melanocephalus
Lowestoft North Beach - 5th (moulting adult + juvenile), 31st (adult).
Gorleston - 4th (juvenile).
Corton/Hopton - 21st (A first winter was patrolling backward and forwards along the coast).
Breydon South Wall - 30th (1st winter).

Lowestoft North Beach - 16th (2). Two finally appeared on the groynes. August is normally a pretty good month to see them resting on the groynes here, but not this year so far for some reason. Excellent numbers appeared towards then end of August with c70 at Minsmere on the 31st. Unlike the last couple of years many juveniles have been seen which is excellent news.

YELLOW-LEGGED GULL Larus (cachinnans) michahellis
The usual adult was still along the North Beach at Lowestoft on the 3rd and 5th.
On the 4th Yellow-legged Gulls were noted at Burnt Hill Lane, South side of Lake Lothing and Lowestoft North Beach.

ROSEATE TERN Sterna dougalli
A rather splendid adult was present all too briefly on the groynes along Lowestoft North Beach on the evening of the 3rd. Shortly afterwards it flew leisurely southwards past Ness Point but unfortunately did not return. Some small consolation for the Lesser Crested Tern sneaking past undetected last month.

COMMON TERN Sterna hirundo
Small numbers present along Lowestoft North Beach on the 3rd, mostly adults with only one or two juveniles present.
On the 4th, 19 adults were feeding in the basin between Oulton Broad road bridge and the railway bridge.



ARCTIC TERN
Sterna paradisaea
One juvenile was present along Lowestoft North Beach on the evening of the 3rd. Another flew south on the 11th. The pure white secondaries are shown to good effect below. A juvenile flew north past Corton on the 8th.

Three were seen near Nebb Cottage, Flixton on the 25th.



PIED FLYCATCHER
Ficedula hypoleuca
One was trapped and ringed at Kessingland on the 16th. One was seen at Gunton on the 21st.
One was at the entrance to Corton Woods on the 30th.



TREECREEPER Certhia familiaris
Kessingland sewage works - One was ringed on the 5th was the first of the year at a site where the species is not resident.



RED-BACKED SHRIKE Lanius collurio
This wonderful juvenile was chasing Whinchats (these didn't linger!) when it was first found at Kessingland on the 19th. Still present on the 20th, it was frequenting the slope north of where the sea wall ends either side of the steps with the white rail leading down the cliffs.

HOUSE SPARROW Passer domesticus
A flock of 28 along Lake Lothing on the 14th may indicate a good breeding season locally.




GOLDFINCH Carduelis carduelis
40+ were present at Kessingland Cliffs on the 19th and 20th.



COMMON CROSSBILL Loxia curvirostra
One flew south over Lowestoft North Denes on the 21st.




ESCAPES

BLACK-WINGED BISHOP Euplectes hordeacea
A male of this sub-Saharan weaver finch relative was present on the North Denes along Gunton Cliff on August 9th.



COCKATIEL Nymphicus hollandicus
One was flying over Flycatcher Alley on the 30th.
