New Years Day at Carlton Marshes
© Andrew Easton

A GREAT WHITE EGRET was at Belton Marshes on the 26th before flying to Burgh Castle Marshes, where is was again present on the 27th.

The ground being frozen for a few days seems to have moved the CATTLE EGRETS on from Carlton Marshes the last sighting there being one going to roost on the 20th. Although one was seen at Walnut Tree Farm at Benacre on the 24th.

CATTLE EGRET Bubulcus ibis
At 07:44 on the 1st the three Cattle Egrets left roost with four Little Egrets. Two of them again headed high southwards over Carlton Colville, this time accompanied by a Little Egret; with the third one departing westward, presumably across the River Waveney again towards the Burgh St. Peter area.

One was at Carlton Marshes on the 2nd to 13th at least, with at least two roosting there on the evening of the 6th, and at least one roosting on the 10th. Two left roost at 07:30 on the 12th and headed off towards Benacre.

News was received on the 3rd that the other two has been following sugar beet harvesting operations in fields north of The Street at Benacre on the 2nd, finally solving the mystery of where the birds departing south from roost heading in the Rushmere/Mutford direction have been going. They were there again, near Walnut Tree Farm, on the 4th to 6th and 12th to 15th at least, a commute of just over five miles each way.

On the 19th two left roost at 7:32 and headed of southwards as usual (to Benacre). The third individual was on the reserve during the afternoon at least, and all three arrived back at roost at 16:46.

One roosted at Carlton Marshes on the evening of the 20th, and one was seen at Walnut Tree Farm at Benacre on the 24th, but none have been reported since then following a few days with the ground frozen.
