Exceptional early C20th Yoruba women's wrapper cloth woven in two panels from local hand spun and dyed cotton. A dark indigo dyed band flanks a broad area where indigo and white threads are alternated in the warp to create narrow stripes across the cloth - see detail. Within this are warp stripes in a soft magenta colour achieved when local cotton was dyed to imitate trans- Saharan alaari silk. There also are narrow white stripes in the weft. This the only example I have seen in this particular design and in general women's cloths from the first few decades of the C20th are extremely hard to find in such good condition.  Sewing is by hand throughout.
