CODE#: NW428 PRICE: Email us for price Measurement: 83ins x 57, 211cm x 145 The white fibres of this elegant cloth are not cotton but a bast fibre called ebase that was spun from the inner bark of a tree. Once probably quite widespread in the area of northern Edo speakers and Ebira just south of the Niger Benue confluence, the fibre survives only in the remote rocky village of Somorika high in the hills above Igarra. Cloths like this one are worn as signs of high title status by elder women in the village. A photo of one in use, as well as a picture of the bush from which the bark fibre is obtained can be seen in the catalogue "Woven Beauty" edited by Bernard Gardi. In excellent condition, dates from mid C20th. (c) Duncan Clarke, Version 28/09/2009 |
