All these cloths are genuine indigo dyed fabrics hand woven in various regions of West Africa. Unless otherwise indicated they are old cloths that have been worn and carefully treasured by the man or woman that first commissioned them. Except for some of the resist dyed pieces, which are on imported cloth, the cloths below are woven wholly or predominantly from local hand spun cotton, giving a thick, soft texture. Part of the appeal of indigo is the way it fades with years of wear and this is represented in many of the cloths shown. Nigerian women's weave cloths: these were woven by Yoruba women in south west Nigerian on an upright single-heddle loom and are made up of two wide panels sewn together at the centre. Most are thicker and heavier fabric than the strip weaves.
