These large lightweight blankets woven by Djerma weavers in Niger are used as saddle cloths and tent hangings by pastoralists such as the Fulani and Tuareg. The colourful weft faced bands are evocative of Asante and Ewe weaving and may well be a result of Djerma trading contacts in Ghana in the early C20th, although the Djerma repertoire of supplementary weft motifs differs markedly from that found in Ghana. The complexity of motifs on this example is greater than normally seen and together with the hand stitched seams suggests a comparatively early example of this cloth type, perhaps circa 1950-60. It is in quite good condition.
