Rare Malian wedding blanket by the Fulani maabo weaver Mama Diarra Kiba from the Malian village of Sarema. A contemporary of the better known weaver Oumar Bocoum, his work is very similar in style and it is likely that he too was an apprentice in the 1960s or early 70s of the weaver Abdurrahman Bura Bocoum who is now thought to have invented this figurative style of wedding hanging, called "couverture personages" in the late 1960s. For more details see Gardi ed. Woven Beauty: the Art of West African Textiles (Basel, 2009.)  Usually these cloths show simply a row of similar figures, but in this case the colour of the people depicted is clearly differentiated and it can be read as an anti-colonial commentary showing sexual exploitation and forced labour. The date is circa 1970. There is slight colour run in a few places, otherwise condition is good.
