The Sarakole or Soninke people of Senegal were amongst the most active and skilled indigo dyers in West Africa. In recent decades however the old craft knowledge has largely disappeared and factory made dyes have replaced local indigo in Senegal. This cloth, which is around 20 years old, has the slight purple cast which modern dyers use to mimic the glazed effect that was achieved using indigo. The large stitch resist patterns are an old Sarakole tradition that is less well known than the finer resist cloths of St Louis.
