CODE #: fr353 PRICE: US$1650 Measurement: 125ins x 81ins, 317cm x 206cm. The decoration on this large and beautiful men's sized wrapper cloth is achieved by regularly placed groups of weft stripes in yellow and red, the colour of which is muted by the higher density of the warp. This technique, popular with Bondoukou weavers, is an ancient one, documented in some important C19th cloths from Ghana, and may well predate the use of weft faced blocks. The precise alignment of the stripes on this piece, combined with the dark, almost black, indigo dyed thread creates a subtle and highly elegant effect. One small, circa 1.5cm hole, has been patched on the reverse, otherwise this cloth is in excellent and complete condition. dates from early C20th. (c) Duncan Clarke, Version 10/08/2008 |
