Unusual woman's wrapper cloth from the vicinity of Bondoukou. Regular blocks of weft stripes are muted by the hand spun cotton indigo dyed warp stripes to create a subtle and beautiful effect. This is an old decorative technique in Ghana that is used in the oldest documented Ewe cloth, in Basel museum, dated to 1840. Note the introduction of yellow in a single strip near the top adding slight variety to the design. Soft and faded, but complete, this cloth is in excellent condition. Dates from early C20th.
