This rare style of hand tailored and hand embroidered robe is called a "dandogo" - it has a flared body and 'bat wing' style sleeves. The cloth is the prestigious "etu" or "guineafowl" pattern of fine indigo dyed check woven from hand spun local thread. The sleeves and the hem are lined with with the strip cloth woven from fine magenta silk "alaari" from the trans-Saharan caravan trade. As shown here the sleeves could be folded up towards the  shoulders in use to display the expensive fabric of the lining. The embroidery is a large repeat of the "endless knot" motif. This is a superb regal example in excellent condition and dates from circa 1900-20.
