Wales, with a topography ranging from the lowland to the mountainous, and its extensive coastline, is a land of varied landscape and many different habitats. Its mild, wet climate ensures that many of these are suitable for mosses and liverworts, and indeed these plants are important components of many of these habitats. They can also be useful indicators of environmental conditions - for example, some bryophytes are strict calcicoles (i.e. they only occur where there calcium is freely available in the substrate.
