| The Moss Flora of Britain and Ireland, A J E Smith, Cambridge University Press (1978). The standard work for mosses, covering all species, and with detailed line drawings. Includes comprehensive identification keys (which unfortunately can be rather daunting for the beginner). Not revised since 1978 and now becoming a little dated (a new version is due soon) Still essential for the serious study of British mosses. Purchase The Liverworts of Britain and Ireland, A J E Smith, Cambridge University Press (1990). Relatively up-to-date and currently the only available publication covering all the British liverworts. Again, comprehensive identification keys are included. Purchase
British Mosses and Liverworts, E V Watson, Cambridge
University Press (1981).
A more accessible book for the beginner, giving coverage of all except
the rarer species, with a relatively user-friendly identification key,
informative line-drawings, and useful habitat notes. The Structure and Life of Bryophytes, E V Watson, Hutchinson University Library (1971) A comprehensive, but very dated, review of bryophyte biology and ecolgy.
Atlas of the Bryophytes of Britain and Ireland, M O
Hill, C D Preston and A J E Smith, Harley Books (3 Vols) (1992).
Maps showing the distribution of all the British and Irish species
in 10 km grid squares (based on the British Bryological Society Recording
Scheme). Also useful short accounts of each species, and introductory
chapters on different aspects of bryological recording. Ferns, Mosses and Lichens of Britain, Northern and Central Europe, H M Jahns, Collins (1983) Excellent (though small) photographs. Limited range of bryophytes featured.
Bryophytes and Lichens in a Changing Environment, J W
Bates (Ed.), Oxford University Press (1992)
An excellent and relatively up-to-date collection of papers on the
ecology of bryophytes and lichens and their responses to changes in
environmental conditions, including the effects of atmospheric pollution.
The Hepaticae and Anthocerotae of North America (6 Vols) ,
R M Schuster, Columbia University Press/Field Museum of
Natural History Chicago(1966-1992)
Heavyweight (in every sense!) thoroughly comprehensive account of
N. American liverworts and hornworts, many of which are also found in
Britain. Superb illustrations (B/W drawings). Expensive and some of
the volumes out of print. But if you can find them and can afford them
- buy them! A masterpiece. The Liverwort Flora of the British Isles J A Paton, Harley Books (1999) Just published. A truly excellent work with superb illustrations, useful ecological information as well as the keys and taxanomic descriptions. A must. TheBritish Bryological Society produces a Bulletin twice yearly, with details of services offered by the society, bryological meetings, new records, and other news. It also publishes the Journal of Bryology. |
