Newtonlees Mill is a family home and smallholding, where children and animals can roam together. Situated near Kelso, in the heart of the beautiful Scottish Borders, it is an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding countryside – whether by foot, bike, horse, canoe or car!

Your hosts, Spud, an author, and Rob, her husband, strive towards a self-sufficient life-style and so your breakfasts will be not only home cooked but usually home reared and home cured.

Accommodation

Currently, we are offering one en-suite family room comprised of a double bed/twins, plus mezzanine floor accommodation suitable for older children.

Activities

Cycling. We welcome cyclists and we have bikes for hire, as well as a trailer bike and trailer for smaller children. The Borders quiet country roads are a cyclist’s paradise, and there are many cycle routes nearby such as the Four Abbey Cycle Route, and Tweed Cycle Way. We can offer you daily drop-off and pick-up with bikes should you require this.

Walking. Newtonlees Mill is well situated for walking in the Cheviot Hills, or along the River Tweed. We are also close to many established walking routes such as St Cuthbert’s Way and the Borders Abbey Way. Again, daily pick-up and drop-off can be arranged.

Riding. We have a field where your horse can stay (with electric fence), alongside our heavy horse, Ben. The Borders people have an ancient and strong connection with horses. Each town holds a common riding during the summer, where ride-outs take place daily. Also, the Festival of The Horse takes place in May every year, with activities and demonstrations for all horse lovers.

Canoeing. Canoeing can be arranged on the River Tweed with an experienced and qualified instructor/guide.

Fishing. We are an ideal base for fishing on the Rivers Tweed or Teviot, and other Borders rivers and lochs suitable for all ages and abilities.

Crafts. Workshops available in:

Selecting and preparing wool

Spinning

Dying techniques for wool

Felting

Rag rug making.
